The HiveIQ Deep Box is the core building block of the HiveIQ insulated hive system. Each box holds 9 standard deep Langstroth frames and ships flat-packed — you assemble it with the included screws and exterior wood glue (not included). The 360-degree plastic protective edge around every box prevents hive tool damage at the corners and seals tightly with the box above and below, eliminating the gaps that let in small hive beetles and wax moths.
Paint with water-based latex before installing — this protects the EPS from UV degradation. Avoid oil-based paints, which will damage the foam.
Frames not included. Fits standard 9-frame deep Langstroth frames.
Feeding recommendation: We recommend the Deep Internal Frame Feeder for HiveIQ boxes. It sits inside the box without disrupting the thermal seal — top feeders and entrance feeders don't integrate as cleanly with the insulated design.
Standard wood hives bleed heat in winter and absorb it in summer, forcing bees to spend energy on temperature regulation instead of brood rearing and foraging. HiveIQ EPS has roughly 6x the insulation value of wood. The interlocking box design seals each joint, so the thermal performance holds as long as the hive is assembled correctly. We've run both setups side by side and the difference in winter cluster size and spring buildup speed is real.
Assemble with exterior wood glue in the joints and the included stainless screws. A cordless drill speeds things up but a hand screwdriver works fine. Once assembled and painted, the box is ready to use. No cutting required.
