The HiveIQ Pollen Trap is designed specifically for the HiveIQ hive base. It mounts at the bottom of the hive using the existing varroa board slot — no modifications required. A handle on the outside of the hive lets you open and close the trap without opening the hive, so you can start and stop collection on your schedule without disturbing the colony.
The collection tray slides out from the base for easy harvesting. Pollen collection is seasonal and opportunistic — run the trap only when bees are bringing in strong surplus pollen. Running it continuously or during low-flow periods stresses the colony.
Foraging bees returning to the hive pass through a mesh screen that brushes pollen pellets off their corbiculae (pollen baskets) as they enter. The pellets fall into the collection tray below. The handle lets you switch the screen in or out without a full inspection. When you have enough pollen, slide out the tray and harvest. The bees are not harmed in the process — they still get through, just without the collected pellets.
The pollen trap replaces the blanking plate in the HiveIQ hive base. The blanking plate is included with every HiveIQ Double Deep + Medium Kit and Base & Lid Kit specifically to cover this slot when you're not running a trap. Remove the blanking plate and slot the pollen trap in its place.
Run the trap during strong pollen flows when your colony is actively foraging and building up stores. Spring buildup is the most productive window. Don't run it continuously — bees need pollen protein for brood rearing, and restricting collection during low-flow periods or when a colony is building up can stress it. A good rule: if you're seeing heavy pollen being carried in, you can collect some of the surplus. If foraging is light, close the trap.
